Surfing At Surfer’s Point

Summer time is already here and its looking like the only place you will find little beginners waves is going to be at Surfer’s Point. Now, for the few, and I mean few, days a years that Surfer’s point has waves that are worth surfing you have to wait and pick the days that you can surf there. The reason for this is that the break is just around the corner from South Point, a real surf break, and faces the east ever so slightly. This means that Surfer’s Point always, or most of the time, has a fair piece of breeze on it making the wave tough to spot out and tough to select good waves to ride if you are a beginner. Also days that have wind usually tend to have current in the water too. For the sake of a wave Surfer’s Point can give you just that a let you get wet. Otherwise, Surfer’s Point can be really awkward because of the environment making beginner surfer’s work very hard at staying in one place or moving around the break in order to catch a wave that ultimately may not have the minerals to give them a good ride and for them to learn how to surf on. The other hand is now that when Surfer’s Point has that mystical day of good lines, fair size and no wind or current but is clean and glassy its not only a grand place for beginner surfer’s but actually a fun break to surf. Probably better to longboard but shortboardable as well. These days can be fantastic for beginners since it allows them the chance to feel what a surfboard can really do when a wave is pushing it and also the conditions that are light winds and no current allow beginners to concentrate of the fun part of surf, the wave riding. Surfer’s Point like much of the rest of the island is a reef break and has a good amount of rock on the beach too. It is advisable to wear reef boots while surfing at Surfer’s Point since the reef under foot is very uncomfortable and its better to be safe than sorry. The wave breaks left from the point and will roll you all the way to the beach. Try not to miss the last beach when there is current in the water since the next place to exit the water is a way down the coast and the walk back to the car is a long one. While surfing at Surfer’s Point try and put yourself beyond the point and don’t be afraid to move down from the point as well. This allow for some nice rights as opposed to lefts. Wait on the better waves in the set that will give you something with a bit of shape and face to ride. Remember if you are not happy with the wave at Surfer’s Point Long Beach is just next door. A nice beach break that can often produce when no where else can.
