The Surf Breaks Barbados

The South coast of Barbados is perfect for surfers who are looking for good restaurants and night life that is in close proximity to the surf. The breaks on the South are South Point, Brandon’s, Freights Bay, Thunder and Sunset (Accra). The Surf in Barbados is usually good all year round, November – June typically being the best month's for swell. The surf breaks along the South coast offer up long lefts. The trade winds blow ENE which makes the swell's clean and fun. The best time to surf on the south is at a low tide that is filling back up. This way the water is really being forced over the reef's. The Soup Bowl can be found pn the East coast. A world class right point break that can get really heavy and hollow. This wave is for experienced surfers when it is packing juice. The Soup Bowl faces the East and so the wind can be an adverse factor. When the wind is light the waves are awesome! But there are always waves just with the wind they can get a bit chuncky and lumpy. South Point, typically, is where south east swell will hit first. The break offers left's and right's. It is best to surf at a low tide since the rocks there create hugh back wash on a full tide. Again the wind can be a factor here and therefore so can the current. Brandons by far the best surfing break on the South coast. A long left, however, you may find the odd steep and hollow right. This break is further from the wind and so remains cleaner when places like South Point and Accra are blown to pieces. When the South coast is alight with swell and waves avoid large crowds, beginners and poor blown out surf and come to Brandons. Freights Bay is the most perfect point break the island can offer. The bay is a huge wave cut platform and so a great place for beginners when it is small and a great place for those advanced when huge. Th only draw back with Freights Bay for the advanced surfer is that it is rarely ever huge. Accra is a place where all surfers learned to surf when they were kids. The beach has changed a lot since then and waves rarely are to be found there. Folks used to surf there back in the day before an atrificial reef was errected a short distance from the beach. Accra was once an all sandy bottom where little children could surf on their own safely. Now there are rocks a plenty there. Now days Accra is typically a bathers beach and not a surf break, except for the rare occassion of a storm. The West coast of Barbados has fantastic waves, the stuff of magazine covers. However, this side of the island needs perfect swell to make perfect waves. The West coast responds to strong North swells only. The swells from the North wrap around the North tip of the island and roll down the the West coast of Barbados. You can catch these waves on the west coast at their best from December to April. When the waves are breaking on the West coast it gets very crowded and localism can rear its head but there are so many breaks along the West coast of Barbados that you can always find somewhere to surf.
