Jonathan Reece took top honours in the Open at the first event in the BSA's
Surfer Of The Year series held last weekend at South Point. The Divisions
contested were the Open, Junior Under 21 and Under 16 Boys, Ladies, Under-18
Girls, Senior Men (over 28 years), Masters (over 35 years), Under 12
Juniors, Menehunes and Longboard.
Conditions were fair with waves in the 2 - 4 ft range allowing Jonathan to
showcase his skill in the Open Division as he executed radical, controlled
maneuvers to win from national Junior surfer Jordan Heaselgrave who was a
close second. Jake Corbin was third and Jack Clinton from Great Britain
fourth. The Ladies' Division was won by Chelsea Tuach while Ametza Nicholls
was second, Chelsea Roett third and Jade Niccolls fourth. Chelsea Tuach
also took top honours in the Under - 18 Girls Division, while Chelsea Roett
was second, Ametza Nicholls third and Alyssa Fernandes fourth.
In the Under 21 Boys Division, outstanding junior surfer Lewis St. John was
first, Stefan Corbin second, Lewis Clinton from Great Britain third and
Jordan Heaselgrave fourth. Jordan Heaselgrave went on to place first in the
Under 16 Junior Boys Division while Danny Edghill was second, Gavin
Fernandes third and Josh Burke fourth.
The Under 12 Division was won by Dane Mackie, Joshua Burke and Gavin
Fernandes placed second and third respectively while Zander Venezia was
fourth. Che Allan won the Menehune (10 and under) Division, while Zander
Venezia was second, Jacob Burke third and Andrew Rose fourth.
The Senior Men's Division was won by David Hoad, Christopher Clarke was
second, Carlos Wharton third and Wayne Roett fourth. In the Masters event,
Alan Burke showed that he was still on top of his game by placing first
while Wayne Roett was second, Kenny Tuach third and Gregory Rose fourth.
Alan Burke also won the Longboard Division, Jay Garrett was second, Jordan
Heaselgrave was third and Daniel Edghill fourth.

Next week-end the Juniors fourteen years and under will be contesting the
first contest of the Burkie Junior Championships at Freights.
The primary goal of the Burkies Junior surfing Championships is to host a
series of events every year catering to Junior/beginner surfers 14 years and
under, in an effort to expose this level of surfer to competition as early
in their career as possible, with the ultimate goal of providing a stepping
stone in creating a WORLD CLASS SURFER.
Without the assistance of Lynch Insurance Brokers this would not be
possible. Four events will be held in suitable locations, contested in surf
no larger than 3ft on the south coast in 2009, each carrying a title
sponsor.

The "Freights Event" will be the first time an event will beheld there since
the mid 60's which was organized by David "Freight" Allan after whom the
surf spot is named. These Championships have been sanctioned by the Barbados
Surfing Association and "Surfer of the Year" points will be awarded and an
overall SOTY champion for each division will be awarded at the Barbados
Surfing Association's SOTY Awards banquet.
The Divisions to be contested are 14 and under, Under-12 and 10-under. All
surfers must be members of the Barbados Surfing Association (the Membership
fee is $50 for 1 year or $80 for 2 years). The Entry fee for each Division
is $15 plus $5 for each additional division Entries close on the beach at
8.30am and the event will begin at 9 am sharp. Boards and assistance will
be provided for kids in need by "Burkies Surf school".
Special awards will be given to the most outstanding surfer for the year and
will be crowned "The Burkie Junior Surfing Champion" This surfer will not
necessarily be the winner of any division. It will be based on a
combination of overall performance, effort and attitude. Other awards will
be "Most Improved", "Most Effort" and Most Fun".
We look forward to your support as these events are being introduce to
assist and help fast track the learning process of our children
On February 28th the BSA will be having the World Surfing Games Trials at
either at Option 1 Sand Bank or Option 2 Longbeach. The contests will start
at 8:00 a.m. Entries will close at 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the contest.
The Divisions to be contested are Open Men, Open women, Open Longboard and
Open Bodyboard. From the results a squad will be selected and the final
Team for the WSG 2009 to be held in Costa Rica from July 31st to August 8th
will be chosen by the Coaching Committee. We look forward to your support
of this event as out top surfers vie for a position on our National Surf
Team.
Meanwhile, The Barbados Surfing Association will be sending five (5) Juniors
to compete at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in
Salinas, Ecuador from March 28th to April 5th , 2009. The team comprises
two (2) under 18 boys - Lewis St. John and Jordan Heaselgrave; one (1) under
16 boy - Jordan Heaselgrave; and three (3) under 18 girls - Chelsea Roett,
Chelsea Tuach and Ametza Nicholls.. They will be accompanied by Manager,
Rachel Roett and Team Judge, Margot Tuach
Team members have all been training hard and are seeking to better their
personal rankings and that of their country. Currently, Barbados is ranked
14th in the world, and this year's young, talented team is hoping to better
his ranking!
